While the attitudes of certain institutions will not be able to hinder this maturity, celebrations were limited lest they evoke different meanings. This is an example of extraordinary maturity.Turkey has entered a new period; democracy will be strengthened even further and our political institution will become more powerful. With Gül’s election, the civil will has gained stronger ground to resist bureaucratic pressures and distractions. The new period will be a period of normalization. Separation of powers will be ensured by both the Constitution and democracy. In other words, all the pieces will be put into place. Those who have exhibited this maturity will also display patience and will strive for the demands of democracy without resorting to scare tactics or imposing their will on the people.
The new period also means new horizons. Turkey will grow beyond its shell. Those who infuse instability and insecurity and belittle Turkey will no longer have anything to say. Turkey will free itself from pirates who incite chaos and confusion, open old wounds and create tension and polarization by speaking of fears. Those who like to upset morale and insist on a clash will be weakened in the new term. The era of organized crime gangs and gang intervention in politics is coming to an end. In the new period we will also see less purse snatchers who are let out into the streets as part of efforts to weaken the government.
Those who describe the new president’s compromising, embracive, tolerant and persuasive stance as “trying to gain approval” will be ashamed when they see the president’s true and sincere identity.
Secularism will not be under threat in the new term. On the contrary, secularism will stop being an excuse for intentional debates and instead become a ground for peace. Hence, the secular and democratic republic will become more powerful during the Gül period. It’s no longer just about the talk. Democratic stances and sincere attitudes will dominate.
The winner of the July 22 elections was the majority. The requests of this sensible majority will be heeded over the requests of the loud and combative minority. Even the media, perhaps reluctantly -- but eventually -- will begin to follow the path of this majority. Irresponsible media will succumb to responsible media. The media will become the fundamental venue for the nation to reflect its will.
The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has an important role in opening the way for this new period. The MHP did not surrender to enraged groups, undemocratic people or the pressures of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), but contributed to the development of democracy. The MHP’s stance in this democratic maturity test will always be remembered. The MHP empowered democracy, not the AK Party. We will be able to understand the significance of the path the MHP opened for the sake of compromise in the upcoming days.
May the new period be beneficial for our nation, country, democracy and state.
