State Minister Beşir Atalay said Turkey’s new census system had been launched in 81 cities and would be completed by the end of June. The new system is based on registering addresses, a major improvement to the old sytem, which required everyone to stay in their houses for an entire day while census takers did their work. With the new approach, double registrations will be eliminated and the population changes will be registered more quickly. Residential addresses and identity numbers will be recorded together. “If someone lives anywhere other than the address that was registered before, he or she may face problems, especially with official procedures,” Atalay said. The new census has three categories: Turkish citizens who live in Turkey, Turkish citizens living abroad and foreigners in Turkey.
