Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications Minister Binali Yıldırım announced the opening of the country’s first state-owned e-commerce website on Thursday at a ceremony held at the Çeşme Sheraton Hotel in the western province of İzmir.
The website, e-PTT AVM (shopping center), of the Postal and Telecommunications General Directorate (PTT) aims to cater to both the shopping and delivery needs of its customers. Yıldırım pointed out that the information technology (IT) sector has been experiencing major improvements in the county and informed the attendees that within the framework of the e-PTT AVM project, agreements have been signed with 51 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Stressing the increasing trend towards e-commerce in Turkey, he added that businesses choosing to join the project will be given a free Web address that will enable them to expand their reach and introduce their products to wider crowd, attracting international buyers as well.
Noting that the PTT was established 170 years ago, Yıldırım said, “The PTT needed to adjust to changes in the world, so we decided to update and group our services under three categories: postal, banking and logistics.”
