Turkish Bakeries Federation President Halil İbrahim Balcı, speaking to the Cihan news agency, noted that the 24,000 bakeries operating in Turkey were getting ready to increase the price of bread by 10 to 15 percent.
Balcı, revealing that problems in the sector have led to many transfers of ownership among bakeries, said: “Bakery owners are experiencing serious difficulties, but despite this they do not want to increase prices. A kilogram of bread has not passed the TL 2.50 mark in the last two years, and bakeries are not in favor of selling expensive bread. Unfortunately, bakeries are only remembered for their prices, not for how clean they are or how much effort they put into making the bread they sell healthy. The increase will be under 15 percent and will most likely go into effect in February.” Balcı noted that the increase will not be extreme, as had been the case with previous hikes, and added that the federation will calculate costs and decide on the size of the price increase in February.
