Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi will be a special guest of this year’s SineMardin International Film Festival, the event’s organizers announced over the weekend.

Preparations are well under way for the June 8-15 festival, which will be the seventh edition of the annual event in the southeastern Anatolian province, the team behind the festival said in a written statement on Saturday.

Majidi, the director of the foreign language Oscar-nominated 1998 drama “Children of Heaven,” will attend the festival screenings of three of his films in Mardin, including “Baran” (Rain) and “The Song of Sparrows” in addition to his Oscar-nominated effort.

Majidi is currently working on his next project, a big-budget feature that recounts the early life of Prophet Muhammad, in an undisclosed location.

SineMardin will introduce a novelty at this year’s festival with two competitive sections -- one for documentaries and another for short films. Instead of bringing together a panel of judges made up of film professionals, SineMardin will canvass public opinion and winners in both competitions will be chosen by festivalgoers.

The festival will also bring to Mardin a selection of recent debut films by young directors from Turkey, including “Tepenin Ardı” (Beyond the Hill), by Emin Alper; “Mar” (Snake), by Caner Erzincan; and “İz-Reç” (Trace), by Tayfur Aydın, among others. All screenings in this section will be held with the participation of the films’ directors and leading cast members, the statement added.
