Pop music fans in Turkey are counting down the last two weeks until they can see Sir Elton John, one of the most influential musicians of all time, perform two live gigs in İstanbul and Ankara in early July.

The pop icon will be onstage the night of July 5 at İstanbul’s Küçükçiftlik Park open-air concert area and on July 6 in the Turkish capital at the Ankara Arena in what will be his second visit to Turkey in 10 years.

The concerts are part of the Elton John 2011 World Tour, which kicked off on Jan. 26 at the Stade Couvert Régional de Liévin in France, taking the flamboyant superstar to 47 cities across 21 countries.

John, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for “services to music and charitable services” in 1998, has been inspiring fans and followers for four decades, selling more than 250 million records to make him one of the most successful artists of all time.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Sir Elton’s many accolades include six Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Tony Award. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked him number 49 on its list of 100 greatest artists of all time.

The singer/songwriter is also renowned for his charity work with The Elton John AIDS Foundation, established in 1992 as a non-profit international organization, raising funds and providing services for communities affected by AIDS.
