The doyen of photography in Turkey, Ara Güler, and three other fellow photographers will be honored with the 2011 Culture and Art Grand Award of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, news agencies reported on Thursday.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a written statement on Thursday that the award committee, headed by Minister Ertuğrul Günay, had decided to bestow the 2011 award upon Güler, Sıtkı Fırat, Sabit Kalfagil and İzzet Keribar.
The artists were recognized for “being among the important representatives of the art of photography on both the national and international level, their original works and the contributions they made into this field [the arts],” the statement added.
The four photographers will receive their awards from Minister Günay during a ceremony to be held in İstanbul in January, the Anatolia news agency reported.
The prestigious award is given in a different culture-related field each year by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to recognize individuals who have contributed to the development of their respective areas of specialty in Turkey. Professors Halet Çambel and Nimet Özgüç, two of the first generation of archaeologists in the Turkish Republic, were the recipients of last year’s honors.
