Turkish filmmaker Onur ünlü, the director of critically acclaimed absurdist tales “Polis” (Police) and “Beş Şehir” (Five Cities), has rolled up his sleeves for his upcoming film, a black and white feature, news agencies reported this week.
Titled “sen aydınlatırsın geceyi” (You Light Up the Night), the film is “a kind of love story” and all of its characters are superheroes who have supernatural powers, the Anatolia news agency reported Wednesday. The characters include a football referee who can cross through walls, a woman who can move objects without touching them, a young girl who can stop time, an ogre, and a teacher who becomes invisible. The cast includes many popular stars of the big screen in Turkey, including Demet Evgar, Derya Alabora, Ercan Kesal, Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan, Ayşenil Şamlıoğlu and Cengiz Bozkurt. Ünlü is shooting the film in Akhisar, a district of the Aegean province of Manisa. Filming is expected to wrap up on June 20.
“Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi” is the sixth feature by Ünlü, whose absurdist tales are his signature style. The 39-year-old director is the scriptwriter for most of his films and he is also a co-writer and supervising director on the popular TRT series “Leyla ile Mecnun” (Leyla and Mecnun). Ünlü’s most recent directorial effort was “Celal tan ve Ailesinin Aşırı Acıklı Hikayesi” (The Extremely Tragic Story of Celal Tan and His Family), which opened in November. No release date has been announced for “Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi.”
