Lale Belkıs, a famous model turned singer and actress who has appeared in nearly 20 movies since first making her foray onto the silver screen in the 1960s, will receive the honor award at this year’s Uçan Süpürge (Flying Broom) International Women’s Film Festival, the organizers announced Thursday.Belkıs, best known for her portrayal of villainous women in Turkish movies, will be honored at the opening ceremony of the festival, which will mark its 13th edition on May 6-13 in the Turkish capital. Belkıs “chose to portray misfits instead of the good, ideal, smart women and depicted evilness with utter grace,” the festival’s organizers said in a written statement on Thursday.

The festival’s annual Bilge Olgaç Achievement Awards will this year be bestowed upon art director Deniz Özen and actress Gülsen Tuncer. Özen started her career behind the camera in 1983 and since then has put her mark as art director on many well-known Turkish films, including “Züğürt Ağa” (The Agha) and “Deniz Bekliyordu” (The Sea was Waiting). Tuncer, on the other hand, is recognized for “the depth she has brought to the characters she has portrayed on the big screen and her political stance, which has become an inseparable part of her screen persona,” the statement said.

The festival’s opening gala will be held on May 6 at the Ankara Opera House in Ulus. The festival will offer a selection of around 100 films by women filmmakers from both Turkey and abroad under this year’s theme, “evil.”
